The blow up from State Library of WA 032709PD at right dated 1887/8 shows what appears to be a Cowan's Sheldon crane matching this diagram at Albany during construction of the GSR.

Cowans, Sheldon order books tell us that a 10 ton hand crane (Cowans, Sheldon 1536 of 1887) was ordered by the WA Land company on 22 March 1887 and was delivered to WA on 23rd August and this would appear to be it.

According to the diagram book it seems to have become WAGR crane 6 which was rated at 10 tons and had extra stays supporting the jib shown on its diagram below and seen in this photo.

In 1888, this crane was used to test the deflection on Albany Pier coupled to the lcomotive Prncess according to the Australian Advertiser.

I believe that this crane is a essentially a modified version of the design supplied to the WAGR as diagram 2A/2139 cranes although this predates the WAGR examples. It seems likely to me that similar cranes were also built for other railways before being bought for WA.

A hand crane No. 6 was noted as being at Northam in 1938 and 1942 and Midland Salvage in 1970. This is the crane shown in the colour photo below. It may or may nto be the same crane as the one in the earlier photo but if it is then it has been altered. The diagram does suggests that it was downrated to 7 tons from 10 and this would presumably have included removing the extra stays.
