Class CX (Originally class C then CA from 12/1919 to 10/1920) |
The batch of ten C class sheep wagons built in 1919 (10097-10106) used the 16'-0" long GC type chassis giving them a higher capacity than earlier wagons. A second batch of twenty were converted from GC class open wagons in 1920 (214, 6885, 6904, 6986, 7115, 7214, 7428, 7540, 7557, 7607, 7647, 7676, 7752, 7956, 7970, 7899, 8362, 8947, 9091, 9224). They were classed CA until October 1920 when the designation was changed to CX. Why is not known. The WAGR outline diagram is shown below. |

Another batch of conversions from GC class wagons in 1920 were class CX from the beginning. There were also conversions of older C class wagons and also M class coal box wagons. It is likely that some of the ironwork and underframe parts were reused in these rebuilds. The remainder of the construction programme was as follows:

The 8XXX series C class wagons converted in 1930-2 had originally had a different body style to the earlier C class wagons but as the bodies were totally replaced in the rebuilding process this probably made no difference to the finished product. All further rebuilds of C class wagons were to the new CXA standard from 1933. Indeed from 1932 the CX class wagons themselves were rebuilt to CXA type wagons as follows:
1932 | 122, 126, 8240 to CXA |
1935 | 6335, 7896, 7956 to CXA |

The gap in the rebuilding programme is a little difficult to understand as withdrawal of the CX class had already started. The rebuilding/reclassifications of 1953 are interesting. This was the year when a complete stocktake of the wagon stock discovered many wagons "missing". As there was little difference between a CX and a wooden framed CXA it is possible that the 1953 reclassifications had been rebuilt some time previously. The wagons remaining as class CX were disposed of as follows:
1948 | 533, 6317, 7214, 8979, 10904 written off |
1949 | 129, 137, 7643, 7774, 7883, 7922, 10191 written off |
