Class GA open wagons |
A Hurst Nelson builders photo of an incomplete GA in original condition with coil springs (only 1 side and 1 end have been erected and there is no floor - hence the daylight on the brake gear). These coil springs created problems and were removed early on. |
This class of 761 wagons was the first group of four wheel wagons to dispense with the N.Z.R. standard underframe. The WAGR outline diagram for the British built examples is shown below. They were built in both the UK and USA. The American wagons (5948 - 6157 built by American Car and Foundry) had slight detail differences from the UK built examples as can be seen by comparing the diagrams. The WAGR outline diagram for the US built wagons is shown below. GA 6084 is shown below at Fremantle in June 1905 in a blow up from State Library of WA 006014PD. It still has its coil springs. The dipped plank in the door was characteristic of the US examples as built but this was lost as they were repaired over the years. The axleguards on the US examples also had straight edges rather than the shallow curve on the British built ones. |
1901 | 4388 - 4433, 4560 - 4569, 4571 - 4580, 4924 - 4991, 5183 - 5218, 5263 - 5280 built |

GA 6070 above was involved in an accident at Dumberning in the 1930s and so this view of the crash gives us a particularly good look at one of the American built GAs as running at the time. Since it was built it has had the original coil springs replaced with leaf springs and the central metal stanchions at each end have been replaced with heavier wooden ones. It has also gained a bumper on the door to prevent damage to the door and the door height now matches the rest of the wagon. The wagon number is on a metal plate rather than painted onto the solebar as usual. The axleboxes are the WAGR standard type. |
1935 | 6070 destroyed in derailment and written off
6061 replaced by GC |
1937 | 4562, 5094, 5211, 5309, 5423, 5442, 5448, 5456, 5479, 5484 written off and transferred to W.A.G.R. mill |
1945 | 4572 destroyed in Morawa derailment. 5198, 5462 destroyed by fire at Workshops. All written off |
1946 | 6023 destroyed by fire and written off |
In comparison to the near contemporary GB class they were rather larger in cubic capacity and had a steel rather than wooden underframe. This made them quite long-lived with large-scale withdrawals not occurring until the GM class wagons were introduced in the early fifties.; Quite a number became JETTY stock - some used as ash wagons. |
