Class QS sleeper wagon
This class was created in 1963 from old brake van and carriage underframes. It breaks down into three groups. |
ZA type frame and bogies The first group consists of six wagons rebuilt from ZA class brake vans. They had 5'-6" wheelbase plate frame bogies and were 42'-0" long. Numbers 16071-5 were built in 1963 (these are likely to have been ZA167, 169, 182, 184, 187) followed by 16118 in 1967 (probably ex ZA162 ). ZA 198 is also noted as being converted to QS and if this is true it should have been distinguishable by having standard 5'-6" coach bogies rather than the plate frame ZA type. The WAGR outline diagram for this group is shown below. |
The wagons in this group were disposed of as follows: |
1976 | 16072 written off |
1979 | 16074 written off |
1986 | 16075 written off |
1988 | 16073 written off |
1990 | 16071, 16118 written off |
AB type frame and bogies The second group was 49'-0" long on 5'-6"wheelbase coach bogies (apart from 16051 which had RC type bogies). The coaches converted were from classes AA, AB and ACL. In 1963 numbers 16051, 16061-16070 were turned out followed by 16092-16111 in 1965 and finally 16112-9 in 1967. I know some of the carriage numbers associated with these (specifically 16095 ex AA212, 16096 ex AA213, 16096 ex AB401, 16097 ex AB402, 16100 ex AB400, 16101 ex AA220, 16103 ex AB246, 16104 ex AA214, 16105 ex AA215, 16106 ex AB396, 16107 ex AB399, 16108 ex AA207, 16109 ex AA217, 16110 ex AB223, 16113 ex ACL204, 16115 ex AB247, 16116 ex AA208, 16118 ex AB243, 16119 ex AA206).
