Class ZA Bogie Brake vans (later type)

A WAGR official view of ZA9337 in original condition (RHWA collection).

The ZA class brake vans were built to provide passenger accommodation on goods trains. Although they looked like a coach they were never classed as such. There were two groups of these vans. The first group had a platform end whilst the later vans listed here did not.

When the W.A.G.R. stopped providing passenger accommodation on goods trains the ZA and ZB class vans were made redundant but many found a new life as workmen's vans.

ZA9346 met an early end when it was largely destroyed in a fire in October 1928. The frame was used to build a unique AJ class passenger brake van in February 1930. It subsequently became bullion van VY5000 and finally, inspection coach AL1.
