Class ZS Bogie Brake vans |
In 1965 two (type 17b brake vans (494 and 509) were rebuilt with lower roofs and knuckle couplers for bauxite traffic. From 1969 they were reclassified ZS and additional conversions followed although not all ZS class vans had the lower roof. Both vans in the photos carry a black flash indicating that they are radio fitted. |

The two ZO class brake vans (567 and 568) were produced for Western Mining Corporation (in 1965). They used AY type coach bogies with a 6'-6" wheelbase. They were fitted with knuckle couplers from the outset and dispensed with the dog-box found on W.A.G.R. vans. They had a flatter roof profile to allow them to fit under loading hoppers later used on the ZC and some ZS class vans. |

The final design of W.A.G.R. brake van (type 18) was also involved in the conversion to ZS. They were similar in layout to the type 17 vans but had plywood sides and a different roof profile. The vans converted to ZS standard had knuckle couplers fitted and in at least some cases the roofs lowered so that they could run under loading hoppers. The last pair, 579 and 580, ran as class ZS from new.
