This class of over 2000 wagons was built between 1945 and 1951 by Midland workshops and Tomlinsons. They were built in such large numbers to replace older, life expired wagons in classes G, GB and GC.  After the GC they were the second most numerous class ever to run on the WAGR and so after the GC probably the second most important class. The Midland built wagons took random three and four digit numbers from written off wagons whereas the Tomlinsons built wagons were numbered in large blocks of newly issues (5 figure) numbers. The M.R.W.A. also used this design as their class AE. Some of the M.R.W.A. wagons differed in that the diagonal strapping was external rather than internal as seen at right.

(RHWA collection) A new variant of the class appeared in 1949, presumably after the experimental installation on GE8461 shown above. These wagons were fitted with ridgepoles and classified GER. At about the same time a lot of old GC class wagons which had been fitted with ridgepoles were written off and I believe that the GERs were a direct replacement for these older wagons. Meanwhile production of the GEs also continued.

From 1965 CXA class sheep truck chassis were used to build further members of the class. Superficially these wagons look similar to the standard GE but in fact the underframes were quite different. The CXA class had conventional solebars unlike the standard GE chassis. Visually the give away is the deeper side sills on a wagon rebuilt from a CXA. From 1963 cane support brackets were fitted to the sides. They can be seen in use here in the picture of GE 34, a converted CXA.

Almost inevitably, as in many W.A.G.R. classes, there has to be at least one oddball wagon. In this group it was GE13059 - converted from a GER in 1976 - which got an all steel body at some point before it was written off in 1986.
