JW Class tanks

By about 1928 the W.A.G.R. was using J class tankers to transport residual oil. The J class wagons involved were 343, 877, 1443, 2413, 2415, 2431 and 3696. In 1938 numbers 343, 1443, 2415 and 2431 were reclassified JW. Number 2431 reverted to class J in 1944. In 1960 number 343 was written off and 2415 became JETTY 267. This left only number 1443 which was finally written off in 1977.

However in 1977 a new JW was created from the frames of BE20600 and the tank from JOA 10242. This tanker was 18'-0" long rather than the 15'-0" of the earlier wagons. It was written off in 1990.
