Class LW Wheat Hopper |
A shortage of suitable wagons for hauling wheat in bulk lead, in 1945/6, to the conversion of twenty L class ballast hoppers for wheat. The conversion involved a wooden extension 3'-3" high fitted to the top of the metal hopper to increase the volume available. The load carried weighed the same but wheat is much less dense than rock - hence the extra volume required. In 1950 one of the wagons was written off and the remainder reverted to class L. |
