The M.R.W.A. originally coded its ballast wagons "H". There seem to have been a substantial number of these judging by the number of the only recorded survivor (29H) which, by 1911 had become IA270. This wagon had disappeared by 1927. The H code was later used for the horseboxes.
I suspect that this group of wagons was inherited from the contractor who built the line (Edward Keane). These are mentioned in a snippet in the West Australian for 15 February 1889.
This class may have included wagons from a number of sources including ex W.A.G.R. stock. It is possible that I 283-289 were classified IA at one point in the 1920's. |
