In 1971 four class QRC wagons were converted to class QRN (759, 6813, 7163, 7221) to carry nickel containers. Seventeen more followed in 1972 (804, 942, 4232, 4274, 4311, 5198, 6692, 6985, 7031, 7072, 7136, 7179, 7232, 7237, 11248, 11268, 11274, 11286) although numbers 759, 804, 942, 11248, 11268, 11274 and 11286 were also reconverted to QRC in the same year. QRN class wagons were fitted with roller bearing bogies.  They were later used for other types of containers such as the bulk Ammonium Nitrate containers shown below. Number 7072 was written off in 1983 followed by 4232, 4274, 4311, 5198, 6692, 6813, 6985, 7031, 7136, 7163, 7179, 7221, 7232, 7237 in 1985
