WGL 631 was built for Western Mining Co. in December 1976 to carry Nickel Matte. It was followed by 2 more new wagons (632, 633) in 1977.

Further additions to the class were by conversion from class WFN. There were four conversions in 1979 (WFN 604, 605, 608, 610 became WGL 634-637) and a further five in 1984 (WFN 601, 603, 609, 602, 606, 607 became WGL 638-643).

The similar WAGR owned wagons in class WGLA were 30027, 30115 (converted from WFDY) and 30119 (converted from WSA) in 1985. These three were still intact in 2010, running as class AOLF.
