In 1971 production of the XF class Alumina hoppers started with a single wagon (XF21203). It was followed in 1972 by the rest of the first batch of 27 wagons (21201/2, 21204-21227). Another batch of four (21228-21231) was built in 1974 followed by a further four in 1975 (21232-5), twenty-three (21236-21258) in 1976 and eight (21265-21272) in 1978.  For some reason the numbers 21259 and 21260 were not used. Bain Leasing had 25401-25418 built in 1981 followed by 25419-25428 in 1982.

The next group turned out were for Worsley Alumina (25501-9 in 1982 and 25510-25536 in 1983). Further batches for Westrail followed in 1989 (25429-25431), 1990 (21273-6) and 1991 (25537-25545). There was another batch for Worsley Alumina built by Goninan's in 1999 numbered 21145-21175. Subsequently nine more wagons (21191-21199) were built ( I don't know when)

The four similar, XFL class, lime wagons (21261-4) built in 1974 were converted to XF standard in late 1976 which suggests that they were not a great success in that role.

In June 2010 the whole class of 145 wagons (21191-9, 21201-21258, 21261-21276, 25401-25462) plus the 76 wagons of the Worsley fleet (21145-21175, 25501-25545) was intact.
