A total of sixty XU class hoppers were built in 1987/8 with XU25601-3, 25605-9, 25611-20, 25623, 25624, 25626, 25627 entering service in 1987 and 25604, 25610, 25621, 25622, 25625, 25628-25660 being placed in traffic in 1988. They were the first Aluminium bodied grain hoppers built for the W.A.G.R. The design was superseded by the XY class which made better use of the loading gauge.

Two XU were listed for scrapping in 2014 but I don't know if this happened. In 2016 some (at least) of these wagons were fitted with standard gauge bogies, reclassified AGUY and moved to NSW.
