| Class ZAF Temporary Brake vans |
|
In the early fifties there was a brake van shortage because of the increase in traffic on the W.A.G.R. Five AF class coaches were converted to temporary brake vans as an emergency measure in October 1952 and reclassified ZAF. As they were all originally different types of coach the bodies of all of this class were slightly different although they were all 42' long. According to Weekly notice 42 of 1952 the ZAF brake vans were issued to release main line brake vans for long distance trains. The windows were left in the vans and the doors were sealed except for the guard's compartment. They were used on local goods only with one each being sent to Bunbury, Northam and Kalgoorlie. Once the new type 17 vans came into service the ZAFs were withdrawn. The chassis of ZAF433 was used to build coach AYE709. |
