Class VW bogie workmen's vans (Converted from class V) |
The conversion of V class bogie vans into workmen's vans started very early with the first conversion being before 1904. All of the original vans were used to provide sleeping and messing accommodation for workmen conducting maintenance work in the country areas. The WAGR outline diagram is shown below. Which of the early VWs actually looked like this I don't know. |
This photo from the Fretwell collection shows VW3499 in use as a survey van at Southern Cross in June 1928. |
The table below gives a breakdown of the VW vans converted from class V. Vans at one time or another that are known to have sleeping vans are shown in blue. |

More than any other group of wagons the "written off" dates should be treated with healthy suspicion. The following photos taken during the eighties and nineties show several vans still in use long after they were "written off". In later years some vans ran without numbers and thus may be difficult to identify. The first two shots are the opposite sides of the same (unnumbered as far as I could tell) van. |
|
Another unidentified van with only the very small class letters to give it any identification.
VW1874 had once been a VA class louvred van. The position of the two outer louvres are indicated by the windows.
VW3263 near the end of its days at Midland although long after it was supposed to have been written off in 1976.
Both sides of VW3273 (I think). This one had a large "roof rack" as did some other converted V's at the time.
VW3280 was a long time Bridgetown resident back in the eighties. Both sides of the van are shown. It was another van nominally written off in 1976 but still in use well into the eighties.
Both sides and one end of VW3320 right and below. Again this was was supposed to have gone in 1976 but didn't. |
|
Both sides of VW 3386 are shown in the next two photos. VW3386 was yet another of the vans written off in 1976 but somehow reprieved.
VW3395 carried the "Hotel California" branding (complete with palm tree) in the eighties - presumably applied unofficially by the inhabitants. Was this the only "named" goods wagon on the W.A.G.R.?
VW3441 was a lot less exotic than 3395 but did have an unusual arrangement of windows. (Both sides shown) For a van nominally written off in 1976 it was looking remarkably good in the mid eighties and was still very much in use.
Finally, to finish, a shot of VW3444 |
