Between 1964 and 1971 a total of one hundred and fifty-two GH class wagons were converted to class GHD. This was the first variant on the GH class. The conversion involved two additional "cupboard" doors above the main drop door in the side of the wagon. This would have considerably weakened the side of the wagon and so whilst producing a wagon which for some traffic might be easier to unload also made the wagons less suitable for substances like coal. Unusually for W.A.G.R. wagons, the first fifty conversions were given new numbers. Later conversions retained their original numbers in the GH series. |
