M.R.W.A. Class DXB class sheep wagons. Later W.A.G.R. class CXA.

The M.R.W.A bought a total of thirty sheep wagons to the W.A.G.R.'s CXA class design between 1949 and 1955 as follows:

1949 DXB619-623
1950 DXB624-630
1955 DXB601-618

The two sides of the wooden bodied DXB.

In addition a batch of all steel versions of the design (but with detailed differences) was built in 1961 (DXB631-642).

When the W.A.G.R. took over in 1964 these wagons (of both types) became class CXA. They were renumbered as follows:

1964 DXB 601-9, 611, 612, 614-622, 624-630 to CXA 40401-9, 40411, 40412, 40414-40422, 40424-40430

DXB631-4, 636-9, 641, 642 to CXA40431-4, 40436-9, 40441, 40442

1965 DXB610, 613, 623 to CXA 40410, 40413, 40423

DXB635, 640 to CXA 40435, 40440

Frank Stamford's photos show CXA40417 (ex DXB617) in February 1966 still wearing its Midland grey but with WAGR numbers.

The decline in sheep traffic meant that these wagons were quickly used as a source of underframes for conversions. The all steel wagons lasted longer than the rest as sheep wagons but none were converted for further use. Presumably removing the bodies was more difficult.
