In 1970 nine VD and ten of the VF class vans were fitted with load dividing equipment and reclassified. The VD conversions became class VDL. The vans involved were 23009, 23027, 23034, 23035, 23050, 23073, 23076, 23090, 23106. In 1986 three vans (23009, 23050 and 23076) were converted to class RCJ steel opens. Four more were also converted to class RCJ in 1987 (23027, 23035, 23073, 23090) and the remaining two vans (23034, 23106) were written off in 1992.
